A well-known writer, the client's computer had crashed, possibly taking down with it bytes and bytes of important data. Compounding matters further, the external drive on which she had backed up the data also crashed.
The incident only underlined the fact that methodical data back-up on trusted hardware/applications has never been more important. We are starting to get a lot of calls on data loss and recovery most probably because of the lack of systematic back-ups or back-ups on cheap and possibly defective hardware. And, only back-ups won’t be effective if a test restore is not carried out periodically.
A hard drive normally gives out dozens of warning signs before it conks out. Blue screens, slowness, difficulty in starting the computer, error messages are all warnings that should be immediately heeded. If the computer is tended to at this stage, then the cost of repairs is negligible.
But, unfortunately, many people tend to wait until there’s a major problem and then when the system goes down they are willing to pay anything.
While the Mace IT team, led by Technical Lead Dev, works on retrieving and restoring the data of our St Heliers client, I thought I would alert everyone to the importance of storing and backing up data on a ‘cloud’.
Highly recommended is the powerful NAS (Network Access Storage), which not only offers security of data but also myriad features, perfectly meeting the needs of home and business users. The best thing is NAS backs up your data on a cloud automatically without you having to lift a finger.
This particular client will be going in for NAS and Mace IT will configure it for her and train her on unleashing its full potential (the features are listed below).
